When I saw a convincing replica of John Finley Scott's 1953 Woodsie Bike (one of the very first bicycles adapted for off-road use) online, I decided to build my own. I began with a 1950s Schwinn Traveler, identical to Scott's 1950s World (even the graphics are the same). I found a Super Champion chain tensioner, but it was missing the hardware that attaches to the frame, so my friend Charlie Dixon worked for hours in the hot sun to fashion an attachment out of an old chain guard bracket and screen door spring. (Scott would have loved it!). The Sturmey-Archer three speed hub is dated 1953. With two additional cogs on the rear, I have a nine speed version of Scott's Woodsie, the bike that preceded California's Repack riders by twenty years. Tyger Johnson made extensions to create the necessary long reach brakes.
