Once I started building Clunkers, I couldn't stop. Too much fun. (I was living backwards, as I so often do, pretending I had caught the original Clunker mountain bike wave back in the seventies. Well, as they say, it's never too late to have a happy childhood).
The Schwinn Excelsior you see here had been repainted (and had incorrect decals applied) by the time I found it years ago. But it spoke to me. (I know it sounds a bit "Shirley MacLainish" to admit to talking to bicycles, but I do. And sometimes they talk back). I added a "King Sting" front fork, Schwinn BMX stem, an Atom drum brake to the rear, an alloy chainring, Sun Tour Bear Claw pedals, Schwinn large-flange alloy front hub, some cross brace handlebars, a killer Ideale sprung saddle, and I was living the dream.
