John Howard is a first-rate harmonica/blues harp player I was privileged to hear last performing with Cyclocross champion Tyger Johnson at the 2019 Wheelmen Meet in Sedalia, Missouri. John is better known as one of the greatest cyclists of all time. An abbreviated list of his achievements include the 1985 motor-paced land speed record of 152.2 miles per hour on the Bonneville Salt Flats; a gold medal in the 1971 Pan American Games; four-time National Road Cycling Champion (1968, 1972, 1973 and 1975); and the 1981 Ironman Triathlon World Championship.
John Howard recently trained Denise Mueller-Korenek, who in 2018 set the current paced bicycle speed record of 183.932 miles per hour.
Legendary frame builder Dave Moulton built my John Howard bicycle in 1983, one of roughly 300 machines made this year. My bike is serial number 258. My friend James Allen of Pedalers Bicycle Museum in Springfield, Missouri sent the bike my way. The original owner is said to have raced with John Howard on this very machine.
The last photo is of John's former Cyclocross competitor, Tyger Johnson, who has just taped the bars.
