I grew up in the 1950's watching Hoppy, Gene, and Roy (Hopalong Cassidy, Gene Autry, and Roy Rogers) every Saturday morning. Each of these TV cowboys had bicycles created in their image. I decided to build my own cowboy bike for my grandson Scotty, who rustled cattle and robbed banks under the name "Scotty Bandito." At age six he rode his cowboy bike in the Festival of Trees Parade in Davenport, Iowa, with a dozen highwheel bicycles circling him. What a brave boy he was!
Scotty's bike began as a 20 inch Monark in house paint. I added some Mead golden brown color, a saddle (with pommel), double holsters with Hubley six-shooters, a leather horse blanket (cut from my friend Dick Bodell's boots), a lasso, and a Wells Fargo strongbox on the rear rack. We filled the strongbox with chocolate coins wrapped in gold foil for the parade spectators. In the photos below you can see Scotty arresting a pair of pirates (this day Scotty was on the side of the law). We felt sorry for the pirates, and let them help themselves to a gold coin. The clown loved our cowboy bike. Great Fun.
