"Tim Isaac built his first bicycle frame in 1974 and continued producing frames under his own name until he joined Trek bicycle in 1979...In the early 1980s, mountain bikes were becoming more popular and Trek began investigating the category. Since Tim was the leading design engineer, and a frame builder, he built a couple of prototype mountain bikes to test out some designs..." --Mombat
These prototypes would lead to the creation of Trek's first production mountain bike, the 1983 850. The 850 has a black lugged frame with contrasting red panels, a color combination I find quite handsome. I especially like the complementary black components, the SR "Slingshot" stem, Suntour Power Ratchet thumb shifters, and the one-year-only SR quick-release seat post with fore-aft adjustment.
