Every Christmas my mother would take me and my brother David to the loop in downtown Chicago to eat "under the tree" at Marshall Field's. With its iconic clock hanging above the State Street entrance and its vaulted ceilings of Tiffany Favrile glass, a trip to the historic Field's department store at Christmastime was an unforgettable experience. Known for the high quality of its merchandise, Field's toy department was a wonder to behold. The Field-badged bicycles and tricycles sold on State Street were among the finest of the day. The 1930s tricycle you see here undoubtedly made some boy or girl very happy; although, judging by the pristine paint, the child either rode the trike very little, or his/her parents insisted it never be left out in the rain.
